Yesterday’s announcement from the governments of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island to advance Maritime Regional Electricity Co-operation and System Integration is vitally important. As electricity demand continues to grow across the country, stronger regional planning and greater use of interprovincial electricity connections will be essential to maintaining affordability, reliability and economic competitiveness.
Electricity Canada has long supported greater regional integration and intertie development as a practical way to improve system performance, reduce costs and enhance energy security. The research in our recent study on Interties with Deloitte has shown the importance of better utilizing connections between Canadian provinces. Stronger interprovincial collaboration can help Canadians access the benefits of a more connected grid.
We look forward to working with governments and utilities as this initiative advances, helping build a stronger, more reliable, and more affordable electricity system for the Maritimes, and all of Canada.
